Former Maldivian President and leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party(MDP), Mohammed Nasheed was released by a Hulhumale court yesterday, after being produced in connection with a charge of having abducted a judge during his tenure as President.
 
Omar Razzak, a spokesman for the MDP, speaking to The Island by telephone from Male, said that the three-judge bench freed the former President and fixed the next date of hearing for November 14.
 
"Mr. Nasheed,will join the MDP’s Presidential Election campaign tomorrow," he said.
 
Nasheed’s lawyers had requested for time to study the prosecution case which accuses him of abducting the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdullah Mohammed, during his tenure as President, which was granted, Massod Imad, Media Secretary at the President’s Office said adding "Mr. Nasheed is a free man now."
 
Imad said that the former President was arrested by armed police on the Island of Fares-Maathoda, in the Southern Atoll of Gaaf Dhaal on Monday, for failing to answer summons issued by Court. He was taken to Dhoonidhoo Island Detention Centre and brought to Hulhumalle for the judicial hearing yesterday.
