CID records statement from threatened judge, Bar Association to file charges against Minister

A special team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sri Lanka Police has recorded a statement from the Mannar Magistrate, who was allegedly threatened by a government minister.

Police Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana has said that the CID recorded a statement from the Mannar Judge A. Judeson on the threat made by the Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiyutheen over the phone.

The CID team led by a Superintendent of Police has also recorded statements from five lawyers at the Mannar Magistrate's Court, the Daily Mirror reported.

The CID reportedly had not yet recorded a statement from the Minister who denies that he threatened the judge.

Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is finalizing charges to be filed against the Minister over the alleged threat.

The Executive Committee of the Bar Association at an emergency meeting held last Thursday (July 19) unanimously expressed its strong condemnation and abhorrence of the incident in which a mob attacked the Mannar court complex and the District Judge and Magistrate A. Judeson was threatened and subjected to questioning by Minister Bathiyutheen.

"In the unanimous view of the Executive Committee, this conduct amounts to a serious and unwarranted interference with the Administration of Justice and the judicial process and undoubtedly amounts to Contempt of Court," the Bar Association Executive Committee said.

The Bar Association is to file the case against the Minister on Saturday at the Court of Appeals.
