Sri Lanka Criminal Investigation Department to record a statement from Tamil Tiger women's leader

Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli yesterday granted permission to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to record a statement from the leader of Tamil Tiger women's wing Thamilini.

Subramaniam Shivathai alias Thamilini was arrested by police in 2009 when she was in a refugee camp with other Tamil refugees. She has been in remand custody since then.

The CID which is conducting investigations has sought the advice of the Attorney General to initiate legal action against her.

The magistrate ordered the CID to record the statement in the Women's Prison and instructed the Prison Department to facilitate the procedure.

A special police team arrested Thamalini on May 27, 2009 at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Vavuniya. She joined the LTTE in 1991 and received battle training in a LTTE camp in Nirveli. She has been a combatant until the end of the war.
