Colombo Marathon hopes for increased participation after dawn of peace

The Colombo Marathon, which is the only International Marathon to be held in Sri Lanka, will stage its 10th edition on October 3.

The Colombo Marathon, which is the only International Marathon to be held in Sri Lanka, will stage its 10th edition on October 3. This was announced at a media briefing and the event will be jointly conducted by Lanka Sportreizen, a travel agency which inaugurated the event in 1998 and several other institutions, including the Sports Ministry.

The organisers said that they skipped the 2009 edition due to the unpredictable situation in the country during the preparation period of the 2009 marathon (early part of 2009) and said that they were eagerly waiting for an increase in foreign and local participants when they host the 10th edition, with the dawn of peace.

Thilak Weerasinghe, the Chairman of Lanka Sportreizen, said that he was expecting an increase in the number of foreign participants and working to attract athletes from the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

He further said that over 30 foreign runners from Kenya, Germany and Japan have already registered for the marathon. The champions in both the men’s and women’s categories will receive a cash award of Rs. 250,000 each. The winners will also receive air tickets from SriLankan Airlines, the official carrier of the Colombo Marathon.

The Colombo Marathon, which has been listed in the AIMS calendar as an International Marathon will flag off from Independence Square and will run through Borella, Dematagoda, Peliyagoda, Wattala along the Hamilton Canal, Pamunugama, Thalahena, Pitipana, Duwa to the Beach Park in Negombo.

The marathon, which started in 1998 as the LSR Marathon underwent a name change to Colombo Marathon to act in compliance with the famous city marathons of the world, at the sixth edition in Colombo in 2004.

The Ministry of Sports, the Western Province Tourist Board, SriLankan Airlines, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Municipal Councils of Negombo and Colombo, the Negombo Hoteliers’ Association and the Sri Lanka Tourism are the other institutions joining LSR in organising the event. While the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka is providing technical officials, Sri Lanka Police will help in traffic control.
