Dilshan instructed the no ball

The Island reliably learns that it was opening batsman Tillekeratne Dilshan, who suggested to off‐spinner Suraj Randiv to ball a no ball in order to deny Indian batsman Virender Sehwag his hundred during Monday’s One‐Day International between Sri Lanka and India at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.

With the scores leveled, Randiv bowled a no ball to deny Sehwag a hundred and the ploy was condemned by everyone as it was not within the spirit of the game. Sehwag was left stranded on 99.

After extensive investigation, ‘The Island’ confirms that Dilshan, who was fielding at cover point, shouted in Sinhalese saying, (oney nam, no ball ekak danna puluwan), if you want, you can bowl a no ball.

None of the Sri Lankan players reacted to Dilshan’s advice to bowl the no ball.

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara speaking at the post match conference gave an indication that someone may have suggested to Randiv to bowl the no ball when he said, “If it was deliberate, I will have to have a chat to him (Suraj) and make sure it doesnhappen again. I will have to see also whether there was any talk about it on the field, prior to that delivery,” Sangakkara said.

Dilshan had occasionally been vice‐captain to Sangakkara and when several senior players were rested for a tri‐nation series in Zimbabwe this year was made the captain and went onto lead the side to a series win there.

However, after returning home, when Muttiah Muralitharan, then vice‐captain of the side, announced his retirement from cricket, Dilshan wasn’t named as the replacement for Muralitharan, although many thought he was the automatic choice.

Incidentally, Dilshan and Sehwag are IPL team‐mates at Delhi Dear Devils.
