Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon stated there government was deeply concerned by the ongoing unrest in northeast Sri Lanka, where Sri Lanka troops and Tamil rebels are locked in a fierce conflict.

Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon stated there government was deeply concerned by the ongoing unrest in northeast Sri Lanka, where Sri Lanka troops and Tamil rebels are locked in a fierce conflict.
Cannon added recent developments underline the urgent need for progress towards a meaningful and durable political solution.
Cannon further added there government called on all parties to allow full, safe and unhindered access for humanitarian workers, and ensure the safe and voluntary movement of civilians from combat zones.
According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) a major humanitarian crisis was unfolding with 250,000 people trapped and hundreds reported killed, in the on going battle.
Canadian Foreign Minister delivered strong messages to the parties concerned on the importance of returning to peace process and the need to promote and protect the values of freedom, human rights and the rule of law
Cannon also expressed concern over the increasingly violent attacks levied at media workers in Sri Lanka.

Firstly, countries like Canada should learn to treat the parties in conflict as equals and in unbiased manner. These are the people that led to the failure of the talks in 2006 and to the present human disaster.
