New Constitution would not be influenced by any statement made by a Chief Minister – Ranil

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe assured Parliament yesterday that the process of making a new constitution would continue unhindered by the statements made by various individuals, both in the North and South.

The Prime Minister stressed that the new Constitution would be made by the Constitutional Assembly and the Steering Committee, and would not be influenced by any Chief Minister.

The Prime Minister made the remarks in response to a question raised by the leader of the Joint Opposition in Parliament, Dinesh Gunawardena, earlier this week, with regard to the recent statements made by Northern Province Chief Minister, C V Wigneswaran, at a rally in Jaffna.

“I heard about the statement made by the NPC Chief Minister and his subsequent remarks on the same stating he did not say all what is attributed to him. The formulation of the new Constitution is done by the members of this House. So let us do it the way we want. Various people will make various requests. Let us proceed with what the majority of people and all political parties in this House agree. When the Steering Committee presents its report to the Constitutional Assembly, any objections could be raised at the Party Leaders’ Meeting. Let us proceed with this task.”
