The award for the best journalist who was engaged probing during difficult times in year 2014 has been awarded by the Media institution of Sri Lanka together with Sri Lankan forum of journalists to Theepachelvan who is an Eelam poet, writer and a columnist to the Global Tamil News.

 

This award was provided for the articles regarding the land grabbing, written for the Global Tamil News and then published in “Thinakural newspaper”.

The articles focused on the subjugation of Tamil ethnicity and land such as Thennaimaravadi people who have been struggling for their lands, North-East border villages being appropriated, Othiyamalai village that is being appropriated quietly, etc have been selected for the award.   

It should be noted as a special feature that though the awards given by the Sri Lanka press institution went to trilingual Medias, award for probing during difficult times in year 2014 has been awarded to Tamil Journalist Theepachelvan alone.

He was already awarded the Prof. Kailasapathy award for probing during difficult times in year 2010 and 2011 and also he was awarded the best photographic journalist in 2010.

Theepaachelvan’s real name is Balendran Pratheepan. He studied at Killinochchi Central College and he was awarded the degree specialized in Tamil from the University of Jaffna. Then he did his MA in journalism & communication from university of madras and received his M.Phil degree from the Thirunelveli Manonmanium Suntharanar University.

As the voice of people, Theepachelvan, who is an important poet in Eelam, has been writing several articles on the Global Tamil News regarding the land grabbing and the prevailing issues faced by the people from north and east.
