Woman dies in Walthamstow house fire - By David Eggboro

 

A woman has died in a house fire this morning.

A total of four fire engines and around 21 firefighters were called to the blaze in Exeter Road, Walthamstow, at around 2.10am.

The first floor and half of the ground floor were damaged by the fire and crews found the body of a woman on the first floor, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man jumped from the first floor before the brigade arrived and was suffering from smoke inhalation and back injuries before being taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Firefighters from Walthamstow, Woodford and Leyton fire stations got the fire under control by 03.05.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.(guardian uk)

 A woman died in a fire at a house in east London in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in Exeter Road, Walthamstow, where they found a man, believed to have been the woman's husband of 30 years, suffering from smoke inhalation and back injuries.

He had leapt to safety from a first floor window, firefighters said.

He was taken to hospital by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.

The woman, understood to have been aged in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters discovered her body on the first floor.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "We heard screaming at about 2am that woke us up. At first we thought it was just people getting drunk. But then it just kept on going. We looked out the window and we saw black smoke coming out.

"[The man] jumped out but the wife...she must have got overcome by the fumes."

Firefighters from Walthamstow, Woodford and Leyton fire stations were called just after 2am and had the blaze under control within an hour.

The cause of the fire, which damaged the whole of the first floor and half of the ground floor of the property, is under investigation. (standard uk)

A woman was killed and a man was forced to leap from the first floor after a fire ripped through a house in Walthamstow last night.

The London Fire Brigade was called around 2am to the property in Exeter Road, sending four fire engines and around 20 firefighters.

A spokesman said when they arrived the whole of the first floor and half of the ground floor were damaged by the blaze.

“Fire crews found the body of a woman on the first floor, who was pronounced dead at the scene,” he added.

“A man jumped from the first floor before the brigade arrived and was suffering from smoke inhalation and back injuries.”

The man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

The spokesman conformed the fire was under control just after 3am, and the cause of the fire is ‘under investigation’. (london24)
